Well , remember when your phone line came from an analog RJ11 on the wall? Back then it was the only way to get phone service. It doesn't have to happen that way anymore. Now the PBX is virtual . If you have a small router and network switch then  you are set for Voice Over IP.
Some companies that provide that service are Magic Jack , Comcast or  Vonage.
